How Stone & Vale Evaluates a Piece

Our approach to stone quality, precious-metal weight, construction, disclosure and value — and the questions worth asking before you buy.

Start with the whole piece

At Stone & Vale, selection starts with more than a carat total or a photograph. We consider the stones, precious-metal content, setting, construction, proportions and intended wear together.

We pass on pieces that are too flimsy or too lightweight for their design, poorly constructed, misleadingly specified or not good enough value. The aim is a piece worth considering for what it is, rather than for the name attached to it.

Read metal weight alongside gross weight

Metal weight records the precious metal in the piece; gross weight includes the stones as well. They describe different things and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Weight helps us ask better questions about a design, but it does not establish quality by itself. We consider the setting, links, clasps, proportions and finish alongside it. A heavier piece is not automatically the better choice for every wearer.

Look beyond the carat headline

Two tennis bracelets with the same total diamond weight may use different stone sizes, settings and amounts of precious metal. We review those details rather than comparing the totals alone.

For coloured gemstones, we consider colour, proportions and how the stones work within the setting. The product specifications and available images give you a starting point for that comparison.

Separate what is known from what needs checking

We state known treatments and share origin information and laboratory documentation where available. We do not use a missing report as a reason to imply that a gemstone is untreated or from a particular location.

Ask what documentation accompanies the specific piece and whether an independent report can be arranged. Laboratory choice, scope, cost and timing depend on the request.

Consider the piece in your life

Tell us how you expect to wear the piece, the proportions you prefer and your budget. We can discuss the recorded details, request further imagery or measurements and confirm availability and lead time.

Our role is to make the comparison clearer: what the stones contribute, how the piece is constructed and whether the overall design makes sense for you.
