Caring for Fine Jewellery
Practical care guidance for storage, cleaning, inspections and protecting gemstones during everyday wear.
Everyday handling
Put jewellery on after cosmetics, fragrance and hair products. Remove pieces before physical work, swimming, exercising or using harsh chemicals.
Chlorine, abrasive surfaces and sudden knocks can damage metals, settings and some gemstones.
Storage
Store pieces separately so harder stones and metal edges do not scratch softer gemstones or polished surfaces.
Use a dry, lined jewellery box or individual pouch, and keep chains fastened to reduce tangling.
Cleaning
There is no single cleaning method suitable for every gemstone. Diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, pearls and opals can require different care.
Ultrasonic and steam cleaning may not be suitable for included stones, treated stones, softer gemstones, antique pieces or jewellery with delicate settings.
Inspection
Have claws, settings, clasps and earring fittings checked periodically, especially on pieces worn often.
If a stone feels loose, stop wearing the piece until it can be inspected.
Ask for stone-specific advice
Care instructions can vary by gemstone, treatment, setting and age of the piece. Ask for advice matched to the individual jewellery item.
